SBE Membership Drive
The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), headquartered in Indianapolis, holds an annual membership drive. When I was employed there, one of my responsibilities was to manage this drive, which entailed creating the theme, writing and designing the promotional materials, and soliciting prizes from corporate members.
For the 2006 drive, I was inspired by a conversation I had with a member to take the promotion to a new level. In previous years, we had mailed multiple one-color flyers in a business envelope. I suggested streamlining the mailed promotion into one full-color postcard that directed members to the SBE website for additional information. I used personal photos I had taken at a hot air balloon festival - the SBE logo on top of the primary balloon is something I added in Photoshop. Then I used the conversation I had with our member to create an engaging story to inspire members.

Inspire Someone to Greatness
There was a young operations manager who thought the best he could ever hope for was to be the chief engineer in a large market. Then one day he had a conversation with an SBE member who challenged him to greater heights with a simple persistent question... “Why not?”
Today that young engineer is the senior director of engineering for PBS. He also served two terms as president of SBE. His name is Andy Butler.
Why not inspire someone today with an invitation to join the Society of Broadcast Engineers?
